In this class, you will begin by learning how to hold the brush correctly and practising the basic brush strokes. You will then learn to write mainly Kanji characters in Kaisho (Block Script) using a large calligraphy brush.
Once you become familiar with Kaisho, you will gradually progress to Gyosho (Semi-Cursive Script) and eventually Sosho (Cursive Script).
The class takes place in a quiet and calming environment, giving you the opportunity to slow down, focus, and fully immerse yourself in the practice. Shodo (Japanese calligraphy) is not only a beautiful art form, but can also be a wonderful way to relax, improve concentration, and practise mindfulness. For some people, the repetitive and focused nature of calligraphy can even feel like a form of meditation.
As practising calligraphy can be quite intense, there will be a tea break during the class. This gives you time to rest your hands, enjoy some tea, and have a relaxed chat with fellow participants.
My aim is for this class to be about more than simply learning to write Japanese beautifully. I hope you will also have the opportunity to experience and appreciate Japanese tradition and culture, while taking some time for yourself to feel calm, refreshed, and inspired.

Students begin by learning how to hold the brush correctly and how to maintain the appropriate posture. They then practise the fundamental brush strokes and lines, building the skills needed for Japanese calligraphy.
Once they are comfortable with the basic techniques, students move on to writing Hiragana and Kanji characters using a large brush. They will also have the opportunity to practise writing their own name with a smaller brush.
Through Shodo (Japanese calligraphy), students learn not only how to write Japanese characters, but also develop concentration, focus, patience, and attention to detail through the careful and mindful practice of each stroke.
The class also offers a wonderful opportunity to experience and appreciate Japanese culture and tradition in a calm and creative setting.
